So what does it take to be a Jackson Police Officer?

Police officers are required to perform at optimal levels to ensure their safety and the safety of the community. In addition, officers must represent the department and community professionally. Our entry-level testing is designed to screen for these skills and traits. Consequently, Police Officer candidates start their testing process with the written and physical fitness assessments. If successful, they are invited to participate in the oral interview boards. Once they have passed the oral boards, they are placed on an eligibility list for one year. Should an opening arise, the top-performing candidates would be extended a conditional employment offer that is subject to the results of subsequent testing, including drug testing, a polygraph examination, and physical and psychological tests.

Once a candidate has passed all of these assessments and is hired, the Department will send the recruit to the Wyoming Law Enforcement Academy. The officer receives full salary and benefits while at the academy, and the officer’s training costs are covered. Lateral officer moves from other states will be required to attend a Wyoming criminal law and procedure class at the academy and must take a written certification test to obtain Wyoming certification.
